“अभिषेकं करोति यस्तु पूजां प्रतिदिनं नरः।
सर्वपापैः प्रमुच्यते मुक्तिं प्राप्नोति चान्तिकीम्॥”
Abhishekam, performed daily, frees one from all sins and bestows ultimate liberation.
Śrī Hari is ceremoniously worshipped with an abhishekam accompanied by the mesmerizing and transcendental chanting of either the Vishnu Sahasranama or the Lalita Sahasranama. On spiritually charged days, the holy idol of Śrī Hari is lovingly bathed with milk, honey, yoghurt, and rose water, accompanied by the chanting of hymns. The abhishekam invokes and awakens the divine energies that reside within us. The offerings, along with the hymns, symbolize the offering of oneself along with things worldly to the Lord.
At Sri Badrika Ashram, an abhishekam is traditionally performed on auspicious and spiritually charged evenings such as the Purnima (full moon) and the Amavasya (new moon), and on the mornings of Ēkādaśi (the eleventh day of each lunar phase of the Vedic calendar). An abhishekam is also performed on all nine evenings of the Chaitra Navratri in March/April and Sharad Navratri in October.
Among the twelve Shivaratris in a year, the one that occurs in the Hindu month of Phalgun (February-March) is celebrated as Mahashivaratri. It is the night of the union of Shiva and Shakti. The abhishekam on this auspicious day, performed with holy ash, turmeric and sandalwood, transforms the vigraha of Śrī Hari into that of Mahadev leaving every devotee spellbound and reminding us that, in essence, all forms of the Divine are one.
Sri Badrika Ashram warmly invites you to participate in these sacred ceremonies on these spiritually-charged days.
